Being a parent is a mentally and physically demanding role. There’s no two ways about it, and if anyone says raising a child is easy, tell them to shut up.
I joke. Don’t tell them to shut up lol, it’s rude.
But jokes aside, if you’re blessed with a well behaved, obedient child and you yourself possess the patience of Joy from Inside Out, you should consider yourself very lucky and you have my admiration.
However, if you’re like the rest of us, you have to constantly keep your wits about you when your young children are around. Even when you’re not switched on, you’re still going to have to make sure little Johnny doesn’t pull down a chest of drawers and pancake himself like the kids in that video that’s doing the rounds on Facebook at the moment (why the hell didn’t their parents use the wall support thingies that come with? They’re in the box for a reason you plums! Furthermore, you need to get the child who didn’t get squished and pushed the damn thing off his brother into training for the world’s strongest man competition – you’re onto a winner).
As if it wasn’t enough to be switched on during all waking hours of your child, you have to be ninja cat quick to leap across the room to make sure that you can snatch that mini-cactus that’s up on the shelf that he’s about to take a bite out of that he couldn’t reach but has now discovered that strategically placing a chair and climbing up onto it has opened new dimensions to his world, and added a problem to yours.
You have a choice. You can either be the tired parent who dreads what your child (and life for that matter) has next in store for you, or you can be the parent full of energy who knuckles down and kicks life in the dick with a valiant smile on your face.
A major factor that affects this choice is how well you look after yourself. Eat right, move your arse, manage your sleep properly and you’re well on your way to being the dick kicker.
One of the reasons that I decided to start The Uncool Dad blog is that I am the tired dad who hasn’t been eating right, sleeping right and not exercising anywhere as much as I should. I figured that by sharing my current situation and intention to fix these areas of my life, I’d develop some accountability in getting my shit together and getting back in shape.
“Dad-bods” are sexy blah blah. Bullshit. Being goal driven into getting back your fitness so that you develop the energy again to own life and lead your family like a boss, that’s what’s up.
After all, how can you look after your family if you don’t look after yourself?

Some extra reading if you fancy it – I read this article on motivation this morning. Articles on motivation normally bounce off my retina and back onto the screen but this one struck a chord and really made me want to move my arse again, so much so that I wrote this post Your first minute. Enjoy!
